TESLA

Elon Musk's company leads the electrified market, Chinese BYD is second

Some media have already anticipated the potential success of the Chinese company BYD, reporting its victory in the electric vehicle segment and the victory over Tesla, but in fact, after cutting hybrids, the Chinese rival took second place. Hyundai has also given a big boost over the past 12 months, doubling its electric vehicle sales, putting the Korean company fifth in the world.

The Japanese publication Nihon Keizai Shimbun, as explained by Business Korea, analyzed statistics from MarkLines, which summarized information on sales of electric vehicles in 66 countries. In the first half of this year, Tesla managed to maintain its global leadership with 564,000 electric vehicles sold. The second place is deservedly occupied by the Chinese BYD with 324,000 electric vehicles, although a year ago it was content with fourth place. It is generally accepted that this progress was due to BYD's focus on mid-range and entry-level electric vehicle models, especially in the Chinese market. In one year, BYD's sales increased three and a half times.

Hyundai Motor has doubled electric vehicle sales to 169,000 units, including products from its subsidiary KIA. In the US alone, more than 10,000 electric vehicles each of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and KIA EV6 models have been sold since the start of the year. The Korean automaker ranked fifth among the top ten electric vehicle manufacturers. But the Renault-Nissan alliance, which produces the most massive Leaf electric car, dropped to sixth place in the first half of this year.

Toyota and Honda, with 10,000 electric vehicles sold each, were only in the top twenty manufacturers, but in third place with 310,000 cars sold was a joint venture between SAIC, GM and Wuling, which produces very popular budget compact electric cars Wuling Hongguang Mini. and similar in China. It turns out that among the top three there is only one non-China automaker – Tesla, which still produces most of the cars exported in China.
