PORSCHE

The brand virtually tested a 598 horsepower V8 hydrogen engine

Porsche is becoming more of a company looking to use hydrogen as a fuel after virtually developing a V8 engine that burns hydrogen.

In fact, the auto industry has simulated a large luxury vehicle weighing 2,650 kg and equivalent to the Cayenne, moving around the Nurburgring Nordschleife with this engine and managing to complete a lap in 8 minutes and 20.2 seconds. In the virtual test, the car reached speeds of up to 261 km/h.

Porsche used its 4.4-liter V8 as a starting point for the virtual development, modifying it to handle a higher compression and combustion ratio.

According to Porsche, the turbos needed to deliver twice the air mass of the gasoline engine, but the lower exhaust temperatures made this difficult, forcing the installation of electric turbos.(image above)

The engine produces around 600 horsepower, 598 to be exact (440 kW) with the different turbo settings resulting in different engine pros and cons.

Porsche's simulation revealed that the engine could meet Euro 7 emissions standards. The hydrogen engine is more complex and expensive than a traditional gasoline engine, but it does not require an exhaust gas aftertreatment system, making it comparable in cost to a gasoline engine.

Porsche says it has no plans to put the engine into production in its current form. However, that was not the purpose of the test, as the company conducted it to examine the technology's capabilities. As Porsche says in its announcement, the research helped it gain valuable insights into high-performance hydrogen engines.
