Toyota suggests that hydrogen could be used to fuel an entire city in Japan.
Its sister company Woven Planet opened last February in Woven City, near Susono, which will be a futuristic testing ground for all sorts of urban planning ideas and technologies, including the expanded use of hydrogen fuel throughout the area.
Now, Toyota and Woven have unveiled a working prototype of a portable hydrogen cartridge designed to provide green energy for a range of everyday activities inside and outside the home.
The cartridges are 400 mm long and 180 mm diameter cylinders with a target weight of 5 kg when full.
They will carry around 3.3 kWh of usable energy, depending on the efficiency of the external fuel cell used to convert hydrogen back into electricity.
Cartridges have small handles on top and are designed to fit into slots and lock with a twist wherever they are used.
They can be used as replacement hydrogen batteries for electric vehicles, motorcycles and drones.
They can also be inserted into the walls of off-grid homes to supply the entire home with electricity via a fuel cell.
Additionally, cartridges can be used to power heaters or provide electricity to remote locations. With a small fuel cell on top, they can be thought of as great backup power packs for charging devices.
From a commercial point of view, it looks like they will work like gas cylinders; are replaced as needed and refilled at service stations.
But the company appears to be counting on it to also have a delivery service, delivering cans of hydrogen wherever they are needed.
