Brand announces its autonomous driving system
Nissan is confident the cars will be able to move independently by 2030 and continues to develop its ProPilot technology. The new generation of this system uses a combination of radar, camera and lidar to map the car's environment and provide the vehicle with information about potential collisions to avoid.
The Skyline sedan was chosen to demonstrate the technology. The system is able to avoid pedestrians in a very short time after detection, a vehicle that has deviated from its lane and is coming to meet, sudden traffic situations and collisions - for now under controlled conditions.
Takao Asami, Nissan's vice president of global research and development, said that autonomous technology should be 100% safe by the middle of this decade and can be found on public roads by 2030.
Nissan clarified that not all of its models will have fully autonomous driving technology by 2030 and that this system may be an option on some models.
Asami admitted that the purchase price of a vehicle capable of autonomous driving is still high and that is due to the high price of the leader, but added that some manufacturers are starting to develop this type of technology and that the price should increase and fall in the future.
Laws governing the use of self-driving cars remain a problematic issue in some markets, and Asami believes road safety agencies can help adopt the new technology. He said that in Europe, NCAP could encourage the introduction of new technologies.
A Nissan official added that "some collisions cannot be avoided" and that strategies are being devised to limit damage in such cases. He said that the cars of this brand will avoid accidents as much as possible for the safety of passengers and people in the area.
