DELOREAN ALPHA5: the return of a legend
The DeLorean company is officially back and ready for a new adventure in the world of electric cars. And it has just unveiled its new Alpha5, a four-seater coupe inspired by the company's famous DMC-12, which will be officially unveiled in Pebble Beach next August, during Monterey Auto Week.
One of the Alpha5's most striking features is its massive gull-wing doors, which along with the horizontally slatted rear window, are the only important nods to the original DeLorean from the movie 'Back to the Future'.
Due to its dimensions, it is a much larger car than the DMC-12, which measured 4,200 mm in length, since this Alpha5 reaches 5,000 mm in length, 2,040 mm in width and 1,370 mm in height (with closed, of course).
Like every current electric vehicle, the Alpha5 features huge wheels shod with low-profile tires (Pirelli P Zero, in this case), as well as highly stylized headlights and taillights, a sinuous body (0.23 Cd) and a two-tone finish. It should be noted that the car was designed by the well-known company Italdesign, for whom Giorgetto Giugiaro also designed the original DeLorean.
The car's cabin has four individual seats and has a very clean design, with almost no controls or physical buttons, since almost everything has been integrated into a large floating touchscreen, installed in the center console. The instrumentation, by the way, is also digital.
For now, DeLorean did not want to offer much information about the propulsion system of the Alpha5, but we know that it is 100% electric and that it has a battery with more than 100 kWh, which should offer a range close to 500 kilometers (in the American EPA) .
In addition, it claims an acceleration from 0 to 96 km/h (0-60 mph) in 3.4 seconds, from 0 to 142 km/h (88 mph) in 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 241 km/h, despite all these figures are for the 'base performance' version, which makes us think that in the future there may be more powerful versions.
The model will be manufactured in Italy from 2024, although the propulsion system will be provided by a British company. The brand will limit the production of the car to 88 copies. In addition, DeLorean's future plans include a sports coupe with a V8 engine, an electric sedan and even an SUV powered by hydrogen.
