VW dreams of overtaking Tesla in 2025

Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess are on friendly terms, and the former is in many ways a reference to the German auto giant, which aims to be very active in the shift to electric traction. . Even with the current difficulties, Volkswagen does not give up hope of overtaking Tesla in the number of electric vehicles sold by 2025.

This week, its boss Herbert Diess shared his thoughts on the immediate outlook for the market in general and for Volkswagen itself with the CNBC channel. First, he believes that in the second half of the market, the shortage of semiconductor components in the automotive industry will weaken significantly, unless there are prerequisites for their sudden deterioration. Supply chains should be in order by then, he said.

“Tesla now leads the way when it comes to electric vehicles, it can also be considered the most digital car company, it has a number of advantages. We still hope to surpass it in sales by 2025,” said the Volkswagen boss. Of course, Tesla is opening up new business and therefore it is not so easy to pursue it, but already in the second half of this year, the German rival will feel better in this regard.

Interestingly, the Volkswagen boss explains Tesla's phenomenally high capitalization by investors' faith in the bright future of the electric car industry. According to him, “the markets are always looking to the future”. Previously, Diss used Tesla as an example for his employees to produce electric vehicles on the assembly line, so he makes a reservation about the criteria for competing with this company, limiting his ambitions to the number of electric vehicles produced by 2025. Again, even now, Volkswagen can offer a much wider range of electric vehicle models than Tesla, which is also an important competitive factor. This year, Tesla can produce around 1.5 million electric vehicles, so by 2025 Volkswagen will have to produce several million electric vehicles to effectively compete with Tesla.
