MERCEDES-BENZ

Mercedes-Benz MirrorCam

Actros, e-Actros and Arocs line are already coming with the second generation of MirrorCam

Mercedes-Benz Actros, e-Actros and Arocs trucks are already coming with the second generation of MirrorCam. That is, the camera system that replaces the rear-view mirrors. The novelty has been offered in Europe since April. However, it should soon reach other markets, such as Brazil. Here, the system is sold as an option.

According to Mercedes-Benz's head of development, Uwe Baake, the updates were made based on conversations with customers. ?The day-to-day experiences formed the basis for us to make new adjustments. Especially in terms of display (of images) and security?, he says.

Shorter camera arms... In this sense, changes were also made to the outside of the MirrorCam. The camera arms on both sides of the truck were made 10 cm shorter. This applies to both narrow and wide cab models. According to Mercedes-Benz, this helps the driver when maneuvering in reverse, for example.

Furthermore, in the case of the 2.50 meter wide cab, the camera was located beyond the curb mirror, which is in view of the driver. Thus, the shorter arm avoids hitting obstacles on the side of the road, with tree branches.

New Features...As per Mercedes-Benz, further adjustments have been made to the camera body. This is the case with a drip edge, built into the bottom of the MirrorCam. That way, the water no longer flows onto the surface of the lens. Until then, visibility in the rain could be impaired.

Furthermore, in the software part, the image tone mapping was improved. Likewise, adjustments were made to the display brightness of the images. This makes maneuvering at night and indoors in poorly lit places much easier.

Driver safety and convenience...Another new feature is the wide-angle viewing mode. Likewise, when maneuvering backwards, the distance lines guarantee greater safety. This is because they show the distance of the truck in relation to objects and obstacles such as walls, for example.

In addition, the camera is integrated with other active security systems. So, if on a curve, for example, the driver does not see a cyclist or pedestrian, the device comes into action automatically. Thus, the so-called lateral activity assistant reduces the speed to 20 km/h.

Be that as it may, the brand does not confirm when the new generation of MirrorCam arrives in Brazil. However, it can be assumed that this will occur in early 2023. That is, when the new rules for controlling pollutant emissions for trucks come into force.
