500MI: After more than 20 years a Swede reaches the top of the most famous race in the world
At the hands of Marcus Ericsson, Chip Ganassi Racing broke a 10-year win streak in Indianapolis. Even as one of Indy's top teams, with titles in 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020 and 2021 in this space, the last victory at the Brickyard had come to Dario Franchitti in 2012.
With the fifth victory in Indianapolis, Ganassi equals the extinct Lou Moure as the third most winning team in the race. The team also had triumphs in 2000 with Juan Pablo Montoya, in 2008 with Scott Dixon and 2010 with Franchitti.
Ericsson's triumph was the second in Sweden's IndyCar history. The first took place in 1999, with Kenny Bräck, who represented Foyt and won that edition after Robby Gordon's outage on the last lap.
In addition to Ericsson, Ganassi had Tony Kanaan third, Alex Palou ninth, Scott Dixon 21st and Jimmie Johnson retiring after a crash on lap 194.
