A German court has imposed a nationwide ban on the production and sale of Internet-enabled Ford vehicles. This was reported by Reuters, citing court documentation in the case of patent infringement for wireless technologies.
The decision of the Munich District Court is not yet legally binding and can be appealed. And for it to become temporarily enforceable, the applicant, represented by the Japanese company IP Bridge, must deposit a security deposit of €227 million.
“The object of this litigation was the licensing of basic patents for LTE networks. As we have not yet received a written judgment, we would not like to comment on this matter at this time," Ford said in a statement.
The litigation and subsequent ruling reflect yet another round of tension between tech industry players and automakers – the latter, with the massive introduction of communication solutions and autopilot technologies, must pay royalties for the use of patented inventions.
