Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 won the IIHS's top award, the Top Safety Pick+

Based on the same platform and minimally different from each other, two small sports cars won the IIHS's top award, the Top Safety Pick+.

To do this, they must obtain "good" ratings in six IIHS crash tests, including driver's side small overlap front, passenger side small overlap front, roof strength and headrest tests.

The Forward Collision Avoidance System was rated "Advanced" or "Superior". To receive the Top Safety Pick+ award, they must have standard headlights on all trim levels.

According to IIHS tests, both sports cars meet all the criteria. They are available with four Good rated headlamp systems. Models equipped with an automatic transmission come with a collision avoidance system that is rated "Excellent" in the rating. Both cars are equipped with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine with 228 hp. and 249 Nm.
