TOYOTA
The automaker is currently testing the GR Yaris with an eight-speed automatic transmission as part of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Rally Challenge, according to CarScoops. Toyota Vice President Shigeru Hayakawa is a test driver and has already had some issues with the car that need to be addressed.
According to CarWatch, Hayakawa raced the car on a gravel stage and went from third to second, but when he re-accelerated, the car didn't respond as it should. This prompted Toyota to make some adjustments to the eight-speed automatic transmission.
The eight-speed automatic version of the GR Yaris is expected to include paddle shifters, but those who want more involvement can also use the gear stick. As with a real rally car, Toyota designed this shifter to upshift when pulled towards the driver and downshift when pushed. In other Toyotas with automatic transmissions, the principle is different.
Toyota intends to continue testing the 8-speed GR Yaris in the coming months to ensure the car is suitable for high-performance driving in hot conditions. The current GR Yaris is sold exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission. A similar story was with the Hyundai i30 N, which was sold exclusively with "mechanics" for the first two years, but can now be ordered with an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
