Cheaper Model Y with Bigger Battery Capacity Coming to the US Market Soon
Anyone planning to buy Tesla's Model Y may have to wait a little longer, as a cheaper version with a larger battery capacity is coming soon.
Tesla is currently selling the Model Y in a new Standard Range AWD version that uses 4,680 battery cells to provide a range of 449 kilometers and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in five seconds, and is priced at $59,000. or $3,000 less than the Long Range AWD version. However, it is only available to company employees, but soon anyone who wants to will be able to buy it because it will be available to the masses in the coming weeks.
The new Model Y comes with all-new equipment and includes a magnetic center armrest and trunk shelf. Tesla reportedly delivered several of these versions to its employees at the Giga Rodeo event in Texas last week.
The 4,680-cell battery is twice the size of those currently used by Tesla, but has five times the capacity. This allows the company to increase the range of its vehicles or use fewer batteries to achieve the same range and thus potentially reduce costs.
In the new version of Model Y, these cells are implemented in a structural battery that can reduce complexity and weight, further improving efficiency.
Of course, this Model Y is not so much an expansion of the offer, but rather an important Tesla production strategy. While it will take time for a new battery to make its way into all of Tesla's electric cars, it should still help keep prices up and improve range, and that should lead to a "set" price of $25,000.
