Bavarian brand presented its largest SUV model in a redesigned edition
BMW said in a press release that this is a new corporate look for luxury models, meaning the upcoming 7 Series, i7 and Alpina XB7 are also in line for the same treatment.
The narrow strip of headlights placed just under the hood isn't really a component of the headlights, but LED daytime running lights that also serve as turn signals.
The actual headlights are secretly located in the dark cover under the bumper, and the idea is that other road users won't even notice they're there unless the X7 approaches them at night.
Choose the optional M Sport package and your X7 xDrive40i arrives equipped with M front and rear bumpers and sills, gloss black trim, dark-finished trapezoidal exhausts and 21-inch two-spoke, two-tone wheels.
The flagship M60i goes a step further with M mirrors, pronounced air vents, an M-branded grille, quad exhaust pipes and 22-inch wheels.
If you're a true fan of the M department, the M Sport Professional package includes Shadowline accessories and black or blue brake calipers.
The biggest visual change after the headlights is inside the BMW X7. Instead of a traditional instrument cluster and separate touchscreen, the redesigned SUV gets a combined curved screen consisting of a 12.3-inch digital instrument package and a 14.9-inch multimedia touchscreen with the latest BMW iDrive 8 software.
The screen is subtly oriented towards the driver, like most BMW dashboards over the last 45 years, but the passenger can still see and operate it.
Another big change is the absence of the traditional gearshift lever for the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. It is replaced by a button much smaller than the Swarovski crystal located next to the iDrive rotary controller. Just like the BMW iX.
Among the novelties of the BMW Personal Assistant is that the voice commands have been extended even for opening windows and panoramic sunroof. In addition, drivers can lock and unlock the X7 using a smartphone.
The interior can be configured with either six or seven seats, and to ensure you always have enough performance, the base xDrive40i gets a 47hp boost, for a total of 380hp, while torque is increased by 71Nm to 519Nm and can reach 540 Nm when 48V easy hybrid technology is activated to assist the three-liter six.
Of course, diesel was also kept in production. The BMW X7 xDrive 40d is a three-litre six with 352 hp and up to 700 Nm, or 720 Nm when mild hybrid assistance is activated.
By the way, this is a new generation of starter generator that contributes 12 hp when accelerating, and the maximum torque it delivers is 200 Nm. It reaches 100 km/h in 6.1 s, while the top speed is 243 km/h.
The transmission is an eight-speed Steptronic Sport, which is also fitted to other engines. The highlight of the offering is the X7 M60i xDrive.
Under the hood is a 4.4-liter V8 with 530 hp and 750 Nm. Its top speed is also limited to 250 km/h, while it takes just 4.7 seconds from immobility to 100 km/h.
By the way, the X7 is the first production BMW to be available with optional 23-inch factory wheels!
Among the novelties that the X7 received in the redesign process is the automatic parking assistant backwards, which instead of 50 meters of road as before, remembers up to 200 meters and parks the car in reverse on the same path.
New safety assistance systems features include an expanded range of features offered by the collision warning system, which now also reduces the risk of collisions with cyclists, pedestrians or oncoming vehicles when disconnected from the main road.
If optional cruise control with Stop & Go is active, an automatic speed limiter, route tracking and traffic light recognition system will also be activated. There is also a new exit warning function, which warns passengers of the risk of a collision when opening the door.
