Hyundai HCD-5 Crosstour: the prototype that was at the same time sedan, station wagon and crossover
The year 2000 may not seem far away, but the truth is that 22 years have passed since Hyundai presented at the Chicago Motor Show a curious prototype called the Hyundai HCD-5 Crosstour, with a design of the most striking.
The concept car in question appeared on the scene just when the fever for crossovers had just started, and at a time when cars were very different from each other, unlike today, which are more and more similar to each other.
The five-door model aimed to precisely boost the SUV segment, but challenging the design of more traditional models, merging aspects of sedan, station wagon and crossover in the same body.
The Korean brand's engineers came up with a curious design of suicide-type doors (reverse opening), which also eliminated the central pillar, which facilitated access to the passenger compartment and gave the interior of the prototype an air of greater amplitude.
The design was in charge of the American studio of the brand, the Hyundai California Design Studio, and stood out for a very unconventional front and a very low waistline, with also unusual shapes.
Under the hood of the model, Hyundai installed a 2.7-liter V6 engine, with an output of around 180 hp, which was sent exclusively to the rear wheels, through an automatic transmission.
Unfortunately we don't have any images available of the interior of this HCD-5 Crosstour, although we know from official information that it incorporated a small television in the front console, which only worked when the vehicle was stationary.
In addition, for the back seats, there was also another screen, designed to be able to play CDs, DVDs and even VHS tapes... what a time...
