A recall report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that affected vehicles have a roof function control unit that may not be fully compliant.
This allows the sunroof to be closed without the key fob, which can increase the risk of injury. The recall affects multiple models, starting with the 2022 430i Gran Coupe, 430i xDrive Gran Coupe and M440i xDrive Gran Coupe produced between June 25, 2021 and February 24 this year, for a total of 3,400 vehicles.
The recall will also affect 36,845 BMW X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 xDrive50i, X5 M50i and X5M models manufactured between July 12, 2018 and April 7, 2022. The X5 xDrive45e hybrid also made the list, with 6,921 vehicles for the model year. 2020-2022. In addition, the service action will affect several thousand copies of the X6 and X7 crossovers.
BMW became aware of the potential issue in March 2022 during a test and analysis programme. A technical review has begun, indicating that some aspects of the sunroof control software may not be suitable for US vehicles. In fact, the ceiling function control unit had software containing functions for other markets.
Owners will be notified of the recall on June 13, 2022 and will be asked to take their vehicle to a BMW dealership for repairs. Alternatively, an over-the-air upgrade will be available.
