Bavarian electric SUV becomes 'art cars' project
BMW has a long history of 'art car' projects, often based on important new models as well as iconic classics. The latest project used the new Bavarian electric SUV (the iX) as a backdrop, and the result is not only striking to see, but also promotes sustainable development themes, as well as the idea of associating art and mobility.
However, unlike previous art cars, BMW did not commission the design from just one known artist. Instead, it organized a contest called Re:design iX, which Slovenian art students participated in.
The winner was a student at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Urban Klinkon(image above), who highlighted the iX with his design and decoration idea, integrated into the bodywork of the German model.
Urban used a lot of bold and dynamic lines not only to accentuate some of the design features of the iX, but also to promote some of the artistic concepts used in this work.
For example, only three colors were used: yellow, blue and red, but used to great effect, which with the bold hand-sketched design, really transform the look of the iX.
Like all BMW art cars, it will parade through different events and showrooms across Europe, before possibly arriving at the BMW museum in Munich, and being displayed in some prominent place.
Maybe it will reach the most important BMW exhibition in a certain country. In this case, you can stay in Slovenia after traveling through Europe. As we know, during the next few days it will be roaming the streets of the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana.
Domagoj Dukec, BMW Design Director, was among the judges who chose the best design, saying: “The BMW iX perfectly combines art and technology. We entrust these young artists with a demanding task, that of sharing their interpretations on the interaction of these two themes. The designs we have seen not only highlight the strong character of the BMW iX, but also convince with their unique creativity.”
