TOYOTA

Company files patent for electrified car with manual gearbox and clutch

Electric vehicles enjoy some advantages over their combustion engine rivals. One of them is related to the greater simplicity of mechanics, which makes it possible to design vehicles with shorter fronts, in order to favor the passenger compartment, which is only possible because the engine is substantially smaller compared to a combustion unit, and the gearbox has disappeared, with a simple gearbox in its place. Its handling is also simpler, since the absence of gears allows for continuous and, therefore, faster acceleration.

Toyota, the manufacturer that has the most experience in hybrid vehicles, but one of the most backward in battery electric vehicles, which will only reach the European market this year, is continually surprising with the approach with which it attacks electric mobility. This time, because it decided to give up two of the assets that characterize this class of vehicles.

The eight patents filed by Toyota, in the USA, prove that the Japanese manufacturer is pursuing a solution that involves adopting a gearbox. As if, instead of the biggest brand in the world, we were in front of a transforming workshop, which takes an old combustion engine Toyota and replaces the gasoline or diesel engine with an electric one, keeping the rest of the transmission system, starting with the gearbox. speeds.

If the presence of the gearbox generated the first reason for strangeness, the second came from the fact that the gearbox in question is manual and uses a clutch pedal - it could mount a piloted clutch, which would dispense with the third pedal -, which forces giving up an important comfort factor. Mainly because this same manufacturer does not mount the clutch pedal in its hybrids or plug-in hybrids, which represent the overwhelming majority of Toyota's sales, with manual gearboxes being less and less representative in the range. But the reality is that patents have been registered and there is the box and clutch, although everything indicates that they may be optional. But where there is smoke, there is (usually) fire and Toyota is not in the habit of lining up on fictitious records just to get a few more clicks.
