Cupra Born leaves VW ID.3 and Porsche Taycan behind
The Spaniards of the KM77 guarantee that all new vehicles, or at least the most representative ones, pass their moose test, carried out according to the standard. This maneuver, which aims to determine the agility of the model, consists of dodging an obstacle, forcing the driver to swerve to one side to avoid the obstacle ahead – it can be a moose, but also another vehicle or a child –, and then yaw again to return to the original track. All this without the driver losing control of the car or losing control. The higher the speed at which the test is carried out, the more agile and safe the model is, and the test adapts to the width of the vehicle, so that even the largest models have a chance to compare with the smaller ones.
The Cupra Born, the brand's first electric car whose platform and dimensions are identical to those of the VW ID.3, performed the double S at 75 km/h, a value that, while not being the reference, is better than many rivals, including more expensive, powerful and equipped with adaptive suspensions, more grippy and wider tires. The tested version of the Born was equipped with a battery of 62 kWh gross, 58 kWh useful, the second largest available in the Spanish model. It mounts only one engine, installed on the rear axle, capable of providing 204 hp.
Despite the Born having a sporty character, more than the Volkswagen IDs, the unit that was tested was not equipped with adaptive dampers, which become stiffer when driving is more sporty and demanding, improving behavior.
Even so, the Cupra Born successfully carried out the moose test at 75 km/h, thus beating the VW ID.4, which remained at 73 km/h. And it also surpassed the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S, the most powerful and sporty in the range, with a price three to four times higher, which does not translate into greater agility or safety for its owner.
