A fire is consuming a cargo ship in the Atlantic Ocean. The Felicity Ace issued a distress alarm to the Portuguese Navy after the vessel's hold caught fire, the Associated Press reports.
With 200 meters in length, the ship that transported models of various brands of the Volkswagen group. A considerable portion of Porsches: 1,100, with 189 Bentleys and 21 Lamborghinis. The rest of the load possibly includes new Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 electrics.
The ship was bound for Davisville in the United States. The vessel had departed Emden, Germany.
Fortunately, the 22 crew members were rescued and transported by helicopter to Faial Island, Portuguese region.
With the fire continuing to burn since yesterday, the chance of charge recovery is practically nil. Information so far is that the 17-year-old cargo ship must be towed to the nearest shelter. The website FleetMon, which tracks registered vessels, reports that the Felicity Ace is being boarded by a Portuguese Navy vessel, to remain on hold while the tugs arrive.
A Portuguese Navy spokesman said he had no further details on the ongoing operation.
Speaking to The Drive, Porsche said: “Several of our cars are part of the ship's cargo. We have no further details on the cars at this time – we are in contact with the shipping company and will share more information in due course.”
One of the Porsche customers potentially harmed by this fire was well-known YouTuber Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire channel.
