Alonso welcomes the imminent arrival of Indycar driver Colton Herta in F1
Colton Herta(picture below) became one of the most talked about subjects of Formula 1 due to the possibility of appearing on the category grid in 2022, by Alfa Romeo. Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has already shared a track with the young American at Indy, and believes that the possible presence of the pilot would be good for the Worlds.
At the press conference for the US GP, which takes place in Austin, Alonso spoke about the American driver. Fernando competed in the Indianapolis 500 Miles on two occasions, in 2017 and 2020. In the current F1 season, the Spaniard is 10th in the championship.
"I think he's very good, very talented, very young. I think he's the youngest winner at Indy and he's in a great team, which is Andretti. He would be a good fit in Formula 1, but each one of us has one different career plan, and I don't know what's on Colton's head at the moment, because I know he's happy at Indy, just like Alex Palou, who won the championship this year and is committed to American motorsport, likes racing in the United States," declared the Spaniard.
With his experience at Indy, Alonso also answered whether American drivers are underestimated. For the Spaniard, each one has a high level in their respective categories, and he also recalled the experience he had in the Dakar Rally, in 2020, when he finished in 13th place.
"I don't think so. We respect them a lot, at least I respect all the riders in all the categories a lot. I think they are the best in their categories, and the riding style that is different in each championship. The most extreme is the Dakar , or the rallies themselves, where the experts are almost unbeatable. Wherever you come from and whatever championship you've won, you'll never beat them in rhythm," he continued.
"And I think Indy is the same thing. They're the best on Indy circuits and in Indy cars. If they go to F1, they'll need the normal adaptation we need if we go to Indy. So I don't see the difference, we all have it the same level, which is the highest in each category," he concluded.
