YAMAHA

Company presents its revolutionary electric motors

Yamaha is doing well in the electric bike sector, while there is little news about its electric bikes so far. But now the company has introduced a series of electric motors that are being developed to make rapid advances in the electric vehicle sector.
Yamaha works hard to develop new engines and electric drives designed for motorcycles and larger vehicles. Development began in Yamaha's motorcycle division, but has apparently increased to larger engines, capable of supporting full-size electric vehicles. In a new video, Yamaha showed for the first time a 35 kW unit designed for electric motorcycles.
It is not clear whether the declared value is constant or at peak power. For example, Zero FXS electric motorcycles use electric motors with peak power of 35 kW, which provide a good balance between speed and energy efficiency for these light vehicles.
In addition, Yamaha also showed a new 150 kW engine for full-size electric vehicles. In the video, Yamaha demonstrated the operation of a combination of two of these 150 kW electric motors, driving an electric vehicle with rear-wheel drive.

Engineer Takashi Hara, from Yamaha's 2nd Engineering Department, commented: “First we developed the electric motors for our motorcycles and then we continued this work and used the knowledge of our engine to create these new units. The 35 kW solution was developed for small vehicles, including motorcycles. And the 150 kW capacity plant has already been designed for electric vehicles ”.
Hara pointed out that Yamaha was developing its existing production technology: “We believed that making compact engines was essential. The use of our body molding technology has resulted in an extremely compact design. All of this has led to the emergence of small power plants in general ”.
Although Yamaha has been developing electric motorcycles for a long time, progress has not been very visible until recently. The same goes for other Japanese motorcycle manufacturers: Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki.
However, all four now appear to be making some progress. Honda launched a CRF-style electric off-road bike last year and recently patented parts for the electric Super Cub. Suzuki is also actively filing patents for electric motorcycles. And Kawasaki was successful with its next (but unsuccessful) electric motorcycle, known as the Kawasaki EV Endeavor.
It is not yet clear whether Yamaha plans to integrate the new engines into its vehicles, or rather, offer them as platforms for other companies. Anyway, Yamaha was not idle as previously thought.
