Binotto, back to the origins
Last week, Ferrari announced a restructuring in its technical area of Formula 1, adding a new department, Performance Development. With the changes, one of them changed the team's leadership: Mattia Binotto stopped accumulating the function of technical director.
Binotto confirmed the information on Sunday, during the British GP, where his drivers had very different performances: while Charles Leclerc took advantage of Bottas' problems to get on the podium, Sebastian Vettel faced his own problems over the weekend and it was only the tenth.
"I am no longer a technical director now, I am just a team leader," said Binotto. "There are many tasks in running a company, there is no way to do them all at the same time".
"We recently changed our technical organization in Maranello. We had to do that. I no longer play the role of technical director. We need people responsible for each area. I think we have achieved this."
The restructuring seeks to "achieve a more effective performance development" by "instituting a chain of command that is more focused and simplified, providing the heads of each department with the necessary powers to achieve their goals".
The performance development department is overseen by Enrico Cardile, who served as the team's head of aerodynamics and car project management.
"A change of direction was necessary to clearly define responsibilities and make the work progress, reaffirming the company's faith in its talents," said Binotto last week. "Enrico Cardile's department will rely on the experience of Rory Byrne and engineers recognized as David Sanchez. It will be the basis for the development of the car."
"We believe that Ferrari's people are at the highest level and we don't have to envy our rivals in this regard, but we need to make a decisive change, raising the bar in terms of responsibility for department heads."
