CASE

THE FIRST ELECTRIFIED BACKHOE LOADER OF THE BRAND

CASE Construction Equipment presents the 'Zeus Project', the construction industry's first all-electric backhoe, the 580EV. The power and performance of the model, equivalent to that of other diesel backhoe loaders in the CASE product line, provide considerably lower daily operating costs, while the 580EV has zero emission, a motivating factor for utilities and utilities , which, in different parts of the world, are encouraged to work with equipment that operates with alternative fuels and reduces emissions.
Municipal governments will also benefit from eliminating emissions to work in urban environments and close to other buildings / people, as well as the reduced noise level generated by the new equipment.
Two units have already been sold to utilities in the United States: NYSEG and RG&E, AVANGRID companies, and National Grid. CASE has the capacity to produce additional units in 2020 before increasing production to meet greater demand in the coming years.
“CASE designed the first integrated backhoe loader in the factory in 1957 and has been at the forefront of product innovation since then,” says Leandro Lecheta, head of construction equipment at CNH Industrial in North America. “The 580EV is a significant step in our commitment to sustainability. It is also the evolution of earthmoving equipment and a really practical innovation that provides real savings and competitive advantages for owners of backhoe loaders ”, adds Lecheta.
“The backhoe is perfectly suited to electrification, considering the varied cycles of use, ranging from heavy to light work, providing an excellent opportunity to convert the wasted hours of the diesel engine into zero battery consumption time, enabling the operator an instant torque response when needed, ”says Eric Zieser, global director of CASE's line of compact equipment. “At low idle, a diesel engine has reduced torque and requires time for it to accelerate to meet load demands. Electric motors, on the other hand, have instantaneous torque and peak torque available at each operating speed ”, concludes Zieser.

While applications will vary, each charge will support most common eight-hour workdays.

The 580EV is the second major alternative fuel machine presented by CASE, which presented the 'TETRA Project', a methane powered wheel loader concept with propeller from FPT Industrial, at the 2019 Bauma fair. The electrification was carried out in conjunction with Green Machine, Moog, utilities and other companies committed to converting significant quantities of their fleets to fully electric backhoes. CASE has also partnered with Michelin to equip its unprecedented machine with specialized CrossGrip tires for even more efficiency and maneuverability.

-Ideal electrification for public services and urban environments
The 580EV is powered by a 480 V, 90 kWh lithium-ion battery that can be charged via any three-phase / 220 V connection. Although their applications vary, each load supports most common eight-hour working hours. The battery powers the hydraulic motors and powertrain separately, resulting in hydraulic forces equal to those of diesel machines and improved performance during simultaneous loader and powertrain operation.

-The future of electric vehicles
The 580EV is CASE's first electric machine on the construction equipment market. The manufacturer, in partnership with FPT Industrial, continues to explore additional solutions in electrification, alternative fuels and alternative propulsion systems in all product lines and industries that help achieve total sustainability for the construction sector, without sacrificing power and performance. These solutions will be presented and launched on the market according to the industry's demand.
“We are proving the viability of electrification for a large set of equipment in the compact and light line of equipment. Our goal now is to further expand electrification and alternative propulsion in other product lines and markets, which will also see the benefits of these advances related to sustainability and performance ”, says Zieser.
