MotoGP announced on the morning of Monday (1) the cancellation of another stage of the 2020 season. This time, it was the Grand Prix of Japan, proof that would be contested at the Motegi circuit, which had the non-achievement confirmed by the main category of world motorcycling. This is the first event in Asia to be completely canceled, since the Qatar GP had only Moto2 and Moto3. In this way, of the 21 stages initially planned for this year, seven are officially canceled: Japan, Qatar, England, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany and Finland. Carmelo Ezpeleta, executive director of Dorna, MotoGP promoter, said this year's Championship will be focused on Europe, leaving the continent only in November, making a race in Japan impossible. "The MotoGP family is doing their best to be able to restart the season and hold as many events as possible, as safely as possible. Therefore, in order and Dorna, in consultation with IRTA (Association of teams) and MSMA (Association of automakers), decided that until the middle of November, MotoGP will remain only in Europe, to make as many tests as possible,” Ezpeleta said. "With this, events on other continents, if possible, will be held from the second half of November – which would be too late for the Japanese GP. For this reason it was decided, in consultation with Mobilityland, that the GP of Japan will not be able to be held in 2020. I would like to thank Mobilityland for the support given to MotoGP” " he added.
Among the stages still likely to happen this year outside Europe are Malaysia, Thailand, Argentina and the Americas (United States). Despite this, the test planned for the Circuit of the Americas is at risk, as the Government of Austin, where the track is located, states that events with large audiences this year are unlikely to happen.
