1290 Super Duke R brings electronic and engine changes
The new generation 2020 of the Austrian Hypernaked KTM 1290 Super Duke R arrives renewed, with some small touches to the shape, but in the electronics and engine the thing is more elaborate and sophisticated, making the play even more refined and with excellent management of the entire cavalry the V-Twin plant at 75 °.
The engine is the famous LC8, from Liquid Cooled with 8 valves, of 1290 cm³, DOHC, with maximum power of 180 hp at 9,500 rpm and maximum torque of 14.1 kgf.m at 7,000, keeping up to 8,000 rpm. This new engine gained 3 hp compared to the previous version and is already covered by the new Euro5 anti-pollution standards.
The supply is guaranteed by two 56 mm diameter butterfly bodies with new injectors and works together with two new and more powerful coils and two spark plugs in each cylinder, each with dedicated mapping, according to the rotation and the request of the electronic accelerator. The intake valves are made of titanium and weigh only 39 grams each. The air box went to 10 liters, compared to 7.2 in the previous version.
The dry sump lubrication system was completely overhauled and has three pumps and a new layout of the oil circuit to better dissipate heat. The water pump is also new. The new exhaust system has longer collectors and even housing two catalysts, the complete set weighs 1 kg less than the previous version, reaching 10.1. The clutch has been redesigned and is now more compact and 800 grams lighter.
The lower volume of the system made it possible to integrate the new link anchoring point for the rear shock absorber into the rear of the engine. The six-speed gearbox brings new selector forks with surface treatment, for quicker and more precise couplings, and also has a bidirectional quick shift as an option, for 400 euros.
The electronics incorporate the maximum of today's technology, with a new six-axis IMU inertial center from Bosch that brings a new algorithm that allows a more precise management of ABS and traction control, both updated for curves. The electronic accelerator offers three driving modes, Rain, Street and Sport. As an option, at a cost of 350 euros it is possible to install the Track pack with two more modes that allow a finer and more precise adjustment of all electronic assistance, such as customizing the throttle response, traction control, engine brake, start control and access KTM My Ride, an application that allows your smartphone to talk to the 5-inch TFT panel.
The TFT panel is easy to view, thanks to the excellent organization of the information on the display, offering clear and immediate reading, with all access and interaction made by the handlebar handles, including autopilot, navigation through the various specific menus, ignition and handlebar lock, since the key is for presence sensor. The "+" and "-" buttons are very convenient for quick parameter adjustment, and the C1 and C2 buttons are customizable to the pilot's taste.
