DAKAR 2020
Toby Price wins, Ricky Brabec is more leader and Sam Sunderland leaves
The Australian Toby Price(image above) has become the first driver to repeat stage victory in the 2020 edition of the Dakar: he already won the inaugural stage and has returned to prevail on the fifth day, leaving in Al'Ula and arriving in Ha'il . The KTM rider is second in the general behind the American Ricky Brabec, who extends his lead at the head of it.
One more day, the hardness of the Dakar has claimed a notable abandonment: the British Sam Sunderland(image above), winner in 2017 and third last 2019, has had to leave after suffering a fall at kilometer 187, afflicted with the lumbar and shoulder left. Until then he was among the best of the stage, recovering time lost in the general. It is the third day followed by an abandonment among the favorites, after those of Adrien Van Beveren and Xavier De Soultrait.
Without Sunderland, the options of KTM pass mainly by Toby Price, which continues to be the great threat to the Honda. The double winner of the Dakar has covered the 353 kilometers of special in 3 hours, 57 minutes and 33 seconds, marking the best time in all the sets since WP2, after his teammate Matthias Walkner led the first waypoint.
Price has finished ahead of the two official Husqvarna, beating in 1:12 the Chilean Pablo Quintanilla and in two minutes and a half to the American Andrew Short. Both have taken advantage of that they went beyond the tenth position to recover land.
In fourth position appears the first Honda, which is none other than that of leader Ricky Brabec. The American rider has saved the day to perfection by leaving just three minutes with Price and being ahead of all his teammates, who until now were his main rivals in general.
In fact, just behind him have finished two drivers who lost many options yesterday: fifth was the Austrian Matthias Walkner and sixth Joan Barreda, who has given more than nine minutes with Price and therefore another six with his partner Brabec, moving further away from the final triumph options.
BRABEC INCREASES, PRICE APPROACHES
Ricky Brabec has significantly increased its income at the head of the general classification: it started with two and a half minutes of income over Kevin Benavides and will start the sixth stage that precedes the rest day with more than nine compared to Toby Price, which wins two positions for intrude between the Honda.
Kevin Benavides himself is third, staying more than eleven minutes away from his partner, while Pablo Quintanilla rises to fourth position ahead of Nacho Cornejo, who gives up two places and stays more than 20 minutes away.
Ricky Brabec reinforces his leadership and already has more than nine minutes.
More than half an hour are the first Europeans: Matthias Walkner, who wins three positions to be sixth, and Joan Barreda, who retains the seventh position despite being advanced by the Austrian thanks to the abandonment of Sam Sunderland. The withdrawal of the Briton also allows Luciano Benavides, Skyler Howes and Slovak veteran Stefan Svitko, who gets into the top ten.
Among Spanish pilots, Lorenzo Santolino loses a position but remains in the top 15, while veteran Joan Pedrero wins a position to be 18th and Jaume Betriu advances three places and already appears in a top 20 that Laia Sanz is already approaching , who is still recovering from his bad second stage and is already 23rd overall. Fausto Mota also advances, who wins three places to be placed in the 36th position.
