AUTONEWS

Nissan Leaf
Why Nissan calls women "dumb"?

In conversation with Automotive News, Mexican Ivan Espinosa opened up the game and talked about what went well, and less well, in the recent strategy of Nissan, whose sales on the European continent keep falling. The senior vice president of Nissan Motor Corporation also talked about the lessons to be learned from the launch of electric vehicles (EV), such as Nissan Leaf, stating that “we have many women driving our Leaf and, in some cases, the technologies we use are not very easy for them”.
Spinosa did not specify which technologies of the Leaf apparently cause more “confusion” to women than to men, and it was not clear whether he meant the e-Pedal, the system of regenerating energy, or any other characteristic of a modern electric vehicle. The Nissan board specified yes that the pleasability of the experience of using a battery car 'depends on a number of factors and not just on the charging time', as also 'the location of the charging station and the weight of the cable' matter. And for future electric models, in preparation, the Mexican engineer also claims to have “learned a lot about battery technology and electric motors”, which will “help them to make battery vehicles softer”.
Regarding what went wrong, Espinosa revealed the strategy with which it intends to ensure Nissan a return to the top 10 of sales, from where it came out after the marketing of new vehicles fell 24% in the last year. The Japanese brand, formed in engineering and management by the Monterrey Institute of Technology and higher studies, which hosted some of the soccer World Cup games in Mexico in 1986, also explained that Nissan should be able to recover from the drop in demand for Qashqai, which fell by 19%, with restyling scheduled for the near future.
In terms of technologies for the future, according to Espinosa, Nissan claims to be confident in trams, but above all in the e-Power Solution, which in reality consists of a tram with autonomy extender. A solution similar to that used by General Motors in the past with the Volt (Opel Ampera) and BMW on the i3 REX, which has since been abandoned, and which involves using a combustion engine as an on-board power generator.
This commitment on the part of the Japanese manufacturer is contrary to that of the overwhelming majority of competitors and is very dependent on the way in which the E-Power system is to be viewed fiscally by Brussels. It should enjoy the status of a hybrid vehicle, but its consumption and emissions in WLTP should not benefit from the advantages granted by the earlier and less stringent NEDC method, which allowed the i3 REX to announce a consumption of 0.7 litres and 14g CO2/km.
It is also known that the European Union wants to further limit harmful emissions to the environment and that the status reserved for hybrid and hybrid plug-in has been a blessing (without great technical support and without confirmation in real use situations) to prevent brands from having to pay too high fines in case of non-compliance with the 95g of CO2.
