Golf mild hybrid engine only works for 240 seconds
The limits imposed on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Europe are extremely restrictive and the mesh will tighten even further by 2025 and then by 2030. Nevertheless, Brussels believes that it will be possible to achieve maximum CO2 emissions within 10 years with only 30% of electric vehicles on average per manufacturer. Or less, if they opt for plug-in hybrids, which are highly favoured by the legislator, which has offered this possibility to prevent a large part of the manufacturers from going bankrupt (because they cannot pay the penalties) because of the default already during 2020.
But if the plug-in hybrids are favoured by Brussels, the hybrids and the mild hybrid begin to be “forgotten” because of the low CO2 (and consumption) savings they guarantee. Still, Toyota continues to bet hard on the hybrids, like Renault, which will launch this solution in Clio and Captur, with Volkswagen (brand and Group) betting on the mild hybrid. And one of the latest examples is given to us by the new Golf.
This Volkswagen bestseller has now been placed on the market, with almost all engines available with (whenever equipped with DSG box) and without mild hybrid system, a solution that ensures a small reduction in consumption and, by Table, of pollutant and non-polluting (but greenhouse effect) emissions such as CO2. But a video recently published by the German brand shows that probably its mild hybrid system is more effective than you think.
The Model concerned is Golf 1.5 eTSI, which attempts to reproduce on public roads the type-approval test for consumption and emissions, which is assessed on a test bench and according to a specific programme to be certified. The test included a journey of 33 km, spanning 40 minutes, during which the petrol engine ran 9.45 minutes, or 24%. The novelty is the time period in which the engine is in the coasting function, that is, with the vehicle running but without the combustion engine running.
It should be noted that the 1.5 eTSI is the latest engine of the brand, but it does not appear in the 130 hp version, the most efficient, but in the 150 hp version, better in power but not in consumption. Still, Golf mild hybrid has shown itself to be able, in an 8-minute test, to spend almost 4 minutes with the gasoline engine turned off, saving gasoline and emissions.
The final result is a consumption of only 4.4 liters / 100km, a very interesting value and close to the Toyota Corolla Hybrid. It remains to be seen how it behaves in real conditions of use:
