15-meter bus is option to articulate
The Volkswagen 22.280 bus is the new bet of the company in Brazil. At 15 meters in length, the model is an alternative to articulated buses. In practice, the novelty can carry up to 42 seated and 72 standing passengers, plus a wheelchair. There are 10 passengers less than the capacity of the articulated, which are 18 meters. Sales begin in the first half of 2020.
The new chassis is also an alternative to articulated vehicles that operate under-utilized lines or are only loaded at peak times.
The new Volkswagen 22.280 bus will come standard with 6 × 2 traction. One of the differentials is precisely the third axle at the front.
The two front axles are directional. It is a novelty in the Brazilian market.
Because of the lower drag, this solution translates into better turning radius. It also increases the maneuverability.

Air suspension
Another highlight of the Volkswagen 22.280 is the standard air suspension. The engine is the MAN D08, which has EGR system. This six-cylinder turbodiesel in-line generates power of 280 hp and torque of 107 mkgf. The gearshift is ZF's six-speed manual.
In the new Volkswagen bus the engine is positioned at the front. This setting makes maintenance easier. In addition, the cooling system is simplified thanks to the front air intakes.
The new Volkswagen 22,280 arrives to battle buyers with models like the B270 F from Volvo. The rival of the Swedish brand also has engine in the front. It is the six-cylinder in-line MWM with 270 horsepower and 98 mkgf of torque.
The competitor Volvo chassis is 11.2 meters long and comes standard in the configured 4 × 2. The brand offers a third axis kit, the latter being directional, to be implemented by third parties.
