20-year-old driver dies in crash at Malaysian preliminary race

Saturday (2) ended sadly in Sepang. Indonesian rider Afridza Munandar(photo above) died this afternoon from a serious accident in the Asian Talent Cup race.
The accident also occurred on the first lap of the preliminary race of the World Motorcycle, at turn 10. The race was immediately stopped in red flag for the 20-year-old to receive medical attention.
Munandar was transferred by helicopter to Kuala Lumpur Hospital, but succumbed to the injuries shortly after.
In the 2019 Talent Cup season, Munandar scored two wins, two second places and two thirds and was in the title fight this weekend.
“FIM, FIM Asia, Dorna Sports and all those of Asia's Idemitsu Talent Cup convey our deepest condolences to Munandar's family, friends and loved ones,” the category said in a statement.
The MotoGP World Championship still has in mind the death of Marco Simoncelli, who also took place at a Malaysian Grand Prix in 2011. At the time, the Italian was involved in an accident with Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi, being hit by both. The pilot was taken to hospital after the accident, but due to the severity of the injuries, he did not resist and died at 24 years.
