Combustível Hidrogénio para carros elétricosPioneer project produces hydrogen using solar energy
Spain is focused on improving the environment and reducing emissions of fossil fuels.
To do this, in a partnership between the Spanish government and the energy company Acciona, they will build a solar panel plant with the intention of using this energy to produce hydrogen.
Unfortunately, fuel cell-powered vehicles have low popularity in Europe, as the volume of hydrogen production is small to make it possible for more vehicles to use this environmentally friendly fuel.
Despite this, the government of Spain saw an opportunity to renew the bus fleet and bet on a pioneering project that will save them immense money as well as improve air quality.
Environmentally friendly solar plant construction
On the island of Majorca, in the Balearic Islands, a new solar panel plant will be built that will create hydrogen to be used as fuel.
The solar power plant will represent 41 million euros of public investment. Who will own the production rights is Acciona and, primarily, the supply is intended for public transport.
Therefore, the hydrogen production method itself will be cleaned and the fuel will not emit gaseous pollutants. For now, local authorities are anxious about this hydrogen production, given that it will open doors for a fleet of clean fuel cell buses. Learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of fuel cells.
In the medium term, buses used as public transport are to be replaced by the new fleet powered by natural gas or hydrogen.
Pioneering hydrogen production project using solar energy
This project will be a pioneer in Europe. Not only will it reduce the import of fossil fuels to fuel public transport, but it will also help reduce energy production for home use. And in this way, the Balearic Islands can become self-sufficient in terms of energy production.
The Spanish government also wants to integrate this project into a program that will improve the industrial production of the archipelago located in the Mediterranean, which depends heavily on tourism for capital inflows.
