Company shows interest in buying disabled GM plants in the US
Tesla's CEO and non-CEO Elon Musk has signaled that his luxury electric sedan maker may come to acquire one of several factories about to be closed by rival General Motors (GM) recently closed several plants in 2019, effectively discontinuing six vehicle models and firing about 15,000 people. The maneuver is part of a cost-saving plan and a shift of focus to the production of electric cars.
In an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes," Musk said his company might eventually consider buying one of the closed factories: "It may be that we are interested, if they decide to sell a factory or no longer use it, that we may take possession of it. "It would not be the first time Tesla has done so: in 2010, the company paid $ 42 million to buy a factory whose ownership belonged to General Motors and Toyota. Today, the site is one of Tesla's main production sites.Evidently, Musk's statements should be seen as a response to a questioning in the interview rather than as an official intent. Tesla Motors was asked to comment on the CEO's statement, but did not express itself. Canaltech
