HONDA
Japanese brand closes the diesel engine in 2021
When the current generation of the Civic ends, which will happen sometime in 2021, Honda ends a chapter of its history: it ends with the only remaining diesel engine in its offer, the 1.6 of 120 hp that , besides the Civic, is in the service of SUV like the HR-V and CR-V.
The appointment was given by the UK's brand director general, with Dave Hodgetts confirming to Automotive News Europe that there is no future for diesel at Honda on a global basis. This is despite the fact that the European market is one of the most resentful of the political persecution of diesel, with the demand for this type of engines showing a steady drop in favor of gasoline and, to a lesser extent, hybrids and electric cars.
Honda does not yet have any model exclusively powered by electricity, and its first EV is expected to be introduced one year before the 1.6 i-DTEC scene exit. It will be a retro aesthetic utility, based on the somewhat controversial prototype that the Japanese manufacturer currently focuses on hybridization, following the strategy adopted by rival and compatriot Toyota. Just look at the case of the CR-V, whose sales are based exclusively on diesel, but will only be available with VTEC Turbo petrol engines and the hybrid version i-MMD (Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive). In Toyota's SUV offer, customers already mostly favor hybrid mechanics, which is where Honda wants to go, as the Japanese manufacturer announced that by 2025 it wants two out of three models it sells to be electrified.
To remember that, although it does not yet have a pure electric car on the market in the US, the brand proposes the Clarity, a fuel cell electric car that announces 589 km of autonomy - one of the best values claimed, if not the best, considering the current offer of electric models.onda presented more than a year ago, at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
