R 1250 GS 2019 with "Shiftcam" Technology
A new video has just appeared on social networks showing details of the new BMW R 1250 GS, not only about the operation of its new engine as pictures of its aesthetic for 2019.The new "Shiftcam" system introduced in the 1250cc engine of the new GS responds to the throttle position and operates a system that shifts the camshaft sideways, alternating the actuation of the same between two different profiles. In soft accelerations only the camshaft's partial sections act to cause a smaller opening of the intake and exhaust valves and provide smoother power delivery. When the throttle is opened more decisively, it makes present the total profile of the camshaft causing the valves to open totally and giving off to its 136 hp of power.
At the bottom is a variable valve timing system that we have already used in the past, such as the Ducati Testastretta engine, which advances or delays the ignition timing to achieve higher torque at low engine speed without harming power delivery at high the profile of the cams remains the same in the Ducati engine.
Also the Honda VTEC system is similar to the BMW Shiftcam although the Honda's shut down some of the valves altogether. The higher hydraulic oil pressure in the Honda VTEC engine increases and opens the remaining valves of the engine so that it delivers all its power.
It is doubtful if BMW will be able to provide its new GS with a smooth transition between the two stages as in the Ducati or if the system will make the passage more harsh as in the Honda engine ... we hope to have more information soon.Pedro Rocha(Portugal) and mundoquatrorodas
