GM Sabiá, the truck that anticipated the Meriva

In 2001, the GM Brazil Design Center had an important mission: to create a concept that would draw attention not only to the Brazilian public, but also to the North Americans, as the prototype would be revealed at the Detroit Motor Show. This model would still anticipate the design of the Meriva minivan, product that would be launched also in Europe. It was designed by the 64 designers of the Brazilian studio. The result was the Chevrolet Sabia, a four-door pickup coupe with a very small bucket. It used the base of the Corsa pickup and was very compact, 4.4 meters long, 1.5 meters high and 2.65 meters wide.

The wheels were 20 ". Although it did not really have a powerplant, GM said it was designed to use a supercharged four-cylinder 2.2, but could also be equipped with a 1.8 or 2.0, with front-wheel drive and automatic transmission. The Sabiá received this name for being a bird considered exotic in the USA. It had four doors, and the rear ones were suicidal (opening in the opposite direction). This eliminated column B, making it easier for passengers. Column C was too high to increase the space in the rear seats and still allow the seats to be tilted. The cut before the doors had a reason: instead of mirrors, it was equipped with cameras, which improved its aerodynamics.
