AUDI TEST METHOD WITHOUT EXCESS PULVERIZATION
Two colors, one process: Audi is expanding its painting methods with the addition of paint without over-spraying. This technology allows specific surfaces of a body to be painted in different colors - all in a single spraying process. It is an economically and ecologically correct method. At a pilot painting workshop at the Ingolstadt factory, Audi is testing a method that is unique in the industry, with black car roofs to contrast with the bodywork. The use of heavy coatings, which are slow to apply, is no longer necessary when painting without excessive spraying. To apply a contrasting color, employees previously had to wear protective equipment on a relevant part of the body and then paint it separately with a second process. With spray-free paint, a high-precision robot-controlled instrument now measures laser welding between the ceiling and side structure before each car is painted. A special applicator applies black paint directly to the body in individual strips with millimeter accuracy. The applicator puts the strips of paint on the edges without any 'haze' - that is, without excess spray. This method saves time and money, and the environment also benefits. In addition to the need to use material to cover the body, less paint is needed in the painting process. Audi plans to use the innovative method in series production of vehicles as early as next year. In this way, the manufacturer will offer its customers even more customization possibilities.
