SHELBY
THE NEW EVOLUTION OF THE CLASSIC ROADSTER OF THE NINETY YEARS
After several years modifying Chrysler models, including its slight involvement in the Dodge Viper project, Carroll Shelby was back in the automotive industry thanks to the spectacular Shelby Series 1, an incredible classic-line roadster with huge General Motors-powered V8 engines. This model was considered a type of spiritual successor of the Cobra of years 60, but was not based on any known model. It was designed by Carroll Shelby from scratch, so we can consider it as the first truly complete Shelby model, since the Cobra was actually based on a British model, AC Ace.Of the Shelby Series 1 only 249 copies were manufactured, and although there were plans and even investment to launch a new version, denominated Series 2, this never arrived. Due mainly to the financial problems of the Shelby company, which was even bought at that time, and to the model homologation costs. Now, in conjunction with Wingard Motorsports, which has acquired the rights and tools of the original Series 1 for years, Shelby American has just released a new version in ultra-limited edition format as only four copies will be manufactured per year.
The chassis remains the original used in the Series 1, a lightweight aluminum monocoque, but the new model will feature new elements also in aluminum and carbon fiber, which is why the company announced that the car will be about 12% lighter than his predecessor. The body itself can be manufactured, according to the buyer's choice, in aluminum, titanium or carbon fiber. The chassis is completed with a new suspension and a high-performance brake system in addition to the Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tires.Regarding the engines, they will be those included in Shelby American's extensive catalog, including the largest V8 427 engines. According to the company, it can accommodate blocks with more than 800 hp, but this is the customer's choice. Taking into account that the most powerful versions of the Series 1 did not reach the 500 hp, the advance of the new Series 2 is considerable.
