VW
The German manufacturer will take advantage of the New York Salon 2018 to reveal a mid-sized pickup that, starting from the same platform used by the Atlas SUV, gets a very attractive design, although for now only in the format of a prototype, with few chances to reach production.A few weeks ago, Hinrich Woebcken, CEO of Volkswagen North America stated in a press conference that the American customer of the full-size pick-up segment is very loyal and would have no place for a new player like Volkswagen, segment of the mid-size pick-ups is not attractive because of its low sales volume.Although in principle the information indicated that Volkswagen would be willing to produce a model with these characteristics in the United States, after its presentation spokesmen of the mark were in charge to clarify that for now do not plan to turn this prototype into a model of production.
The prototype uses the MQB modular platform, but with a smaller wheelbase than the Atlas SUV and longer overhangs that have increased its length in relation to the all-terrain. As for its exterior appearance, the Atlas Tanoak shows a daring design, with a double cabin format and an aesthetic that follows the drawing mat of the latest releases of the German brand, with some touches of a conceptual model. In relation to the interior, this one appears with a slightly different design of the Atlas, with some modifications in the central console, a panel of instruments with some changes and some daring touches, like the yellow frame that runs through the interior.
The prototype uses the same 3.6-liter V6 engine that develops 276 horsepower that is also used by the Atlas all-terrain, combined with a DSG automatic transmission with dual clutch and eight speeds, plus a four-wheel drive system 4Motion.The segment of the average pick-ups in the United States does not stand out because of its volume of sales, space that is reserved only for the large models. That is why the possibilities of seeing this prototype as a model of production are remote, given its scarce commercial appeal, as announced by the brand itself. In any case, Volkswagen has promised to observe the reactions of the public and the press and who knows, perhaps the model will become viable in other markets.
