We were riding in the car controlled by the Huawei smartphone ... and we survivedIt's not a car at all. It's a Porsche Panamera. And it's not a smartphone at all. It's the Mate 10 Pro with artificial intelligence processor and ability to "see" the road and distinguish the environment, making decisions based on what you see. But it's still impressive and a little scary to walk in the place of "hangs" without anyone behind the wheel. The RoadReader experience, mounted by Huawei in the Camp Nou car park, Barcelona's stadium, is short but efficient. Taking advantage of the MWC18, the brand has created a controlled environment but that can show a way to use artificial intelligence. Although it is a long way to go.Behind this is the preparation of a Porsche Panamera for the experience by James Brighton, an engineer with more than 20 years of experience in mechanization of vehicles that has already made a series of "spells" of the sort. It was his team that set up the system that allows the Huawei Mate 10 Pro to control the throttle and the brake, but also the steering wheel, of this Panamera of automatic changes (and left hand wheel in the English fashion).
And what is this experience for? Peter Gauden made it clear that Huawei is not entering the war of autonomous cars, at least for now, and that this experience is different from what some brands are doing in self-employed cars, namely Tesla and Google. There is no information that is tied to the cloud, everything is processed inside the car, with the Kirin 970.
Standalone cars still have evidence to give and there is legislation to develop, but Huawei is already trying to put the vision and road reading intelligence on the smartphone. And it works.
