4×4: safety and driving pleasureWith the current portfolio of four all-wheel drive models, ŠKODA is one of the oldest brands to offer vehicles with four-wheel drive technology. The first multi-axis transmission systems were tested in Mladá Boleslav in the late 1930s. The 4 × 4 success story, whose first chapter was written with the ŠKODA OCTAVIA BREAK 4 × 4, began in 1999.Since then, ŠKODA AUTO has produced a total of more than 700,000 full-wheel drive vehicles. The interest in this type of vehicles of ŠKODA is so high, that the Czech manufacturer has added three other models to its 4 × 4 offer in the last three years, being the range composed by KAROQ, OCTAVIA, KODIAQ and SUPERB.
"Throughout the offensive of new models, ŠKODA AUTO has been developing its capacity in the 4 × 4 aspect, establishing itself as an integral traction brand. An example: the best-selling four-wheel drive model in Switzerland in the family segment is ŠKODA OCTAVIA, "said Brand CEO Bernhard Maier. "In 2017, we produced more than 127,000 4 × 4 vehicles worldwide, which means that our all-wheel drive models play a crucial role in the success of ŠKODA. Now, we are expanding our 4 × 4 presence in the SUV model ranges. "Between the launch of ŠKODA's first all-wheel drive model - the OCTAVIA BREAK 4 × 4 - in 1999 and the end of 2017, ŠKODA delivered more than 700,000 4 × 4 vehicles to customers. Just last year, more than 127,000 units were marketed worldwide, including versions of YETI, KAROQ, OCTAVIA, KODIAQ and SUPERB. ŠKODA's all-wheel-drive car also celebrated in 2017 the most successful year in the brand's 117-year history. Last season, ŠKODA FABIA R5 won the World Rally Championship in the WRC 2 category, along with other successes in interregional and national championships. The Pontus Tidemand / Jonas Andersson (SE / SE) team was part of the official team at the 2017 World Rally Championship of WRC 2. In addition, ŠKODA Motorsport won the WRC 2 title.
All current 4 × 4 models are equipped with all-wheel drive technologybased on the latest generation multi-disc electronic clutch. The all-wheel drive system works electronically, accurately and quickly. The control unit continuously calculates the optimum torque distribution between the front and rear axles. The loss of traction is therefore practically eliminated. The first attempts to develop a multi-arm suspension system were made in the late 1930's. ŠKODA built several prototypes of a three-axle bus, where the two rear axles were driving. But these projects never reached the stage of production. Then came the type 903, a military vehicle. The Czech army invited several companies to compete for the construction of a vehicle for the high patents to use in the field, and ŠKODA competed with the 903. The first prototype of the vehicle was built in 1936. Inspired by the ŠKODA 650, it had a six engine cylinders and 3 liters, with a power of 60 hp. The driving force was split between the two rear axles of this three-axle design.
