Subaru BRZ STI Sport Type RA
The Subaru BRZ STI Sport Type RA is here, and it's a race-inspired evolution, as the name suggests.
Subaru has refined its iconic 235-hp 2.4-liter engine, improved the aerodynamics package, and added components straight from its Super Taikyu racing program.
Enthusiasts in the United States have a long history of missing out on some of the best Japanese metal. And while the Department of Transportation’s 25-year import exemption allows us to keep the dream of future ownership alive, a quarter of a century sure is a long time to wait. Subaru are the latest ones to break our hearts, as on Thursday, the brand showed off the limited-production BRZ STI Sport Type RA ... destined only for the Japanese market. Drawing lessons from the car’s participation in the Super Taikyu Series, it might just be the best version of the 86 twins we’ve seen yet.

This race-derived BRZ isn’t a true STI model, but it does receive a few adjustments from the famed motorsports program. These include flexible V-bands, lightweight forged STI BBS aluminum wheels, and a bespoke underbody aero setup. It also benefits from some learnings in the Super Taikyu, gaining unique ZF dampers at all four corners, upgraded Brembo brakes with trim-specific gold calipers, and a rear differential with additional cooling fins. Some chassis stiffening, a new sway bar, and an upgraded muffler further enhance the racey vibe. Small changes, but all welcome enhancements.
The real start of the STI Sport Type RA sits under the hood. A familiar 2.4-liter naturally-aspirated boxer still sits between the fenders, but this is no ordinary FA24. The pistons and connecting rods have a 50 percent reduction in weight tolerance, while the crankshaft benefits from an 80 percent reduction in rotational balance tolerance. The flywheel and clutch cover are also both 67 and 50 percent lighter, respectively. The end result is reportedly an engine that feels much smoother and closer to the racing unit. Put it all together and we have Subaru’s version of a 911 GT3.

From the 18-inch BBS wheels and ZF shock absorbers, larger exhaust pipes to the Brembo brakes and (optional) striking carbon fiber rear wing, every detail has been engineered for performance. With just 300 units available in Japan via lottery (in WR Blue Pearl or Crystal White Pearl), this limited-edition BRZ combines mechanical precision and rarity like no other coupe on the market.
Prices start at (converted) $32,100 for the standard version (200 units will be made), while 100 units will be available with the optional rear wing (priced at $35,400).
