Fiat Stilo Schumacher Edition – A hot hatch with a champion’s aura
Two decades ago, Michael Schumacher was by far the most successful driver in Formula 1 history, with a total of seven championship titles (five for Ferrari). Fiat, as the owner of Ferrari at the time, wanted to transfer some of that aura to its compact class model. The result was the Stilo Schumacher Edition, a special edition that was presented at the 2004 Paris Motor Show.

The Fiat Stilo Schumacher Edition was only available as a three-door, with a 2.4 petrol engine from the Abarth version or a 1.9 diesel with 140 and 150 hp. However, in this article I will focus on the petrol hot hatch version, which is not only more powerful but also much more interesting.
The 2.4-liter naturally aspirated five-cylinder, 20-valve petrol engine sends 170 hp at 6000 rpm and 221 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm to the front wheels. Customers could choose between a five-speed manual gearbox and a semi-automatic Selespeed transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddles. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 8.5 seconds, while the top speed is 215 km/h.

The engine sound was recognizable – deep, rough and unique in its class. The five cylinders and 20 valves give the car a specific character, although some drivers complain about the pronounced understeer and too soft suspension for a sports hatchback.
The Stilo Schumacher Edition was only available in Rosso Corsa, or “Ferrari red”, with a set of aerodynamic accessories developed in collaboration with the German tuning company Zender. The front bumper has four large air vents, the sills are wider than those of the Abarth, and the rear is distinguished by a discreet spoiler and chrome exhaust system tips. On the sides and rear there are special "Michael Schumacher" badges with the champion's signature. The interior is recognizable by its brushed aluminum details.

An exclusive version called the Stilo Schumacher GP was created for the UK market, exclusively with a 2.4 gasoline engine. It was created in cooperation with Prodrive, known for its work on the Subaru WRC program. The GP has a stiffer suspension, modified shock absorbers and 18-inch OZ Superturismo wheels. Only 200 copies were produced, and each has a plate with its own number - from UK001 to UK200.

The Fiat Stilo Schumacher Edition may not be the best sports hatchback of its era, but it is definitely a "rare beast" with a unique character. Especially in the ultimate GP version. As such, he deserves the respect of fans of the Turin factory as well as car enthusiasts in general.
