AUTONEWS

Here are the reasons why you shouldn't fill your fuel tank 'to the brim'

Most drivers like to fill the tank to the brim and round up the amount they will pay at the cash register when refueling. After the automatic first 'click', many continue to fill the tank to get a few extra kilometers of range and round up the amount - for example, from 47.27 to 50 euros.

However, many do not know that in this way they are literally 'throwing money down the drain'.

Brajam Cooley from Road Show states that this is a harmful habit and lists four reasons why you should not overfill your car's tank. Although the extra 'clicking' does not seem dangerous, the following happens: the pump 'spills' the amount of euros, but the fuel does not enter the tank! Namely, the pumps are designed to stop automatically when they detect a change in air pressure while the tank is being filled, according to Autonews.

If you continue to add fuel, it can leak out through the overflow pipe, and it could also pass through the filler hose and return to the pump tank via the cable that is responsible for extracting gasoline vapors.

In addition, modern cars have a fuel vaporization system designed to prevent vapors from escaping from the tank, which means that overfilling can damage the system by leaking fuel into the vapor space. The system can then collapse and the damage can reach hundreds of euros - depending on the vehicle. It goes without saying that filling up 'to the top' can cause fuel to leak around the gas station and cause additional problems.

All in all, more than enough reason to fill up only to the first 'click'.
