How many drivers do not understand modern (safety) technology in cars?

One in four drivers is dissatisfied with the technology in new cars. In particular, features such as lane keeping assist and blind spot warning are bothersome to many drivers.

Many drivers feel uneasy when they get behind the wheel of a new car. Studies show that drivers do not understand how advanced driver assistance systems actually work. They do not know what happens when a car brakes on its own or why the steering wheel suddenly straightens in the middle of a lane change, points out Revija HAK.

New research by the British Directorate General for Cities – DG Cities, cited by Autocar, reveals that four in ten drivers think they have not been given enough information about the systems. These include lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and blind spot warning. The systems can vary from car to car, which creates even more confusion when changing car brands.

One in ten drivers is outright distrustful of the accuracy of the systems. This especially applies to automatic emergency braking and sign recognition. And it is this uncertainty that can have serious consequences, the researchers say. The problem is that no one feels responsible for explaining the technology properly. Car brands do not see the systems as a strong selling point, and this is reflected in dealers, who rarely highlight the features in their dialogue with customers. 

This means that many customers receive car keys without a proper introduction, which in some cases means that drivers only understand the car's functions when they are suddenly activated in traffic, making it a negative experience for many drivers. It is also dangerous in traffic...
