Police officer uses patrol car to push overturned Lamborghini Huracán STO off road in California

A 2023 Lamborghini Huracán STO met a less than glamorous end last Sunday after it rolled over on a winding stretch of Highway 9, on the outskirts of Santa Cruz, California. The Italian supercar, valued at more than US$330,000, was turned into a luxury scrapyard in seconds after the driver, speeding, lost control and ended up with the car upside down in the middle of the road. 

But what drew the most attention in the incident was not the accident itself, but what happened next: a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer used his own patrol car to push the crashed Lamborghini off the road. 

The scene, recorded in images released by the CHP itself, shows the supercar coupe, already completely destroyed, being dragged along the asphalt by a police vehicle. The goal was to clear the road as quickly as possible and avoid further accidents on a stretch known for attracting daring drivers in search of deserted curves and adrenaline. But the method wasn't exactly delicate.

The Huracán STO, a track version of Lamborghini's iconic V10, is a limited-production model with a body made of approximately 75% carbon fiber. And much of this structure was further damaged during the careless removal.

Details such as the hood, fenders and roof — already damaged after the rollover — were dragged along the ground as the patrol car pushed the remains of the car to the shoulder.

Despite the scene of destruction, the two occupants of the vehicle suffered only minor injuries, according to the Santa Cruz CHP.

The accident occurred on a mountainous stretch of Upper Highway 9, a route known among enthusiasts for its winding asphalt and low traffic, ideal for those who want to test the limits of machines like the STO — and, apparently, their own luck.

Despite its discreet paint job, the car involved bore the emblems and details of the STO series, making it clear that it was a special model.

But there, facing the sky and being pushed by a police Dodge Charger, it seemed more like a reminder that arrogance behind the wheel has consequences — and that glamour can end with your Italian jewel being dragged along the asphalt by a public agent with no time for automotive sentimentality.

The scene sparked debate among enthusiasts and Internet users: was this the right way to deal with such a valuable vehicle, even after an accident?

For the authorities, the focus is simple — safety comes before pedigree.

And for car enthusiasts, the lesson is: no matter how much your supercar costs or how many horsepower it has, neither will protect you from physics… or from the pragmatic rush of a police officer with a mission to fulfill.
