Company creates system for battery fires

Hyundai Mobis has introduced a new technology capable of extinguishing fires in battery cells immediately, through the targeted spraying of an extinguishing agent. The system can prevent the spread of heat to adjacent cells, preventing a chain reaction of fire between cells.

The system consists of a set that includes the extinguishing device, a battery casing, a management system (BMS – Battery Management System) and software for real-time control.

According to the company, instead of simply delaying the chain reaction of fire between batteries with heat-resistant materials as in existing systems, the goal of the new technology is to prevent it from occurring from the beginning. To do this, sensors installed in the battery collect real-time data on temperature, electrical voltage and internal pressure. Based on this information, the system can identify anomalies, determine the exact location of the risk and precisely activate the extinguishing agent.

According to the South Korean brand's statement, if a battery cell catches fire, a small fire extinguisher is activated that can put out the fire in just five minutes. This is the first technology that can prevent thermal runaway, preventing heat from being transferred to adjacent cells.

This system contains sensors that, in real time, collect temperature and voltage data, as well as the pressure inside the battery system. This is how any anomaly or defect is identified. In the event of a dangerous situation, the system defines the location of action so that the fire extinguisher can act.

This prevention and safety system created by Hyundai is equipped with a fire extinguisher with five times the capacity of a domestic 3.3 kg fire extinguisher.

The extinguishing agent used is specifically designed to stop battery fires and has superior cooling, insulation and penetration properties when compared to conventional extinguishers.
