GENESIS

Genesis GMR-001

Genesis is set to enter the world of endurance racing, with the Genesis Magma Racing team set to compete in the WEC and IMSA championships in 2026 and 2027, respectively. It all starts with the new GMR-001 hypercar, designed for the LMDh class, which can be seen at the New York Auto Show.

The Genesis GMR-001 Hypercar follows the striking X Gran Berlinetta and X Gran Racer Vision GT concepts, although its design has been tweaked to reflect the requirements of the LMDh. However, it is described as “an inspiration for future models”, and includes several distinct Genesis features such as dual horizontal LED lights and a wide profile line.

The race car features pronounced fenders with large air ducts around its sculpted body, a capsule-shaped roof and large aero components. These include a front splitter, vertical fins and a massive rear wing with an active spoiler.

It's painted a striking Magma Orange, which transitions to Dark Red at the rear.

The company hasn't released full specifications for the hypercar, but we do know that it will feature a standard hybrid system. LMDh regulations limit the car's output to 500 kW/671 hp (with just 50 kW/67 hp coming from its electric motor) and mandate rear-wheel drive. The minimum weight is set at 1,030 kilograms.

The LMDh cars are built around a carbon chassis from one of four selected suppliers and use hybrid components — a battery from Williams, a motor from Bosch and a transmission from X-Trac. Genesis will partner with French chassis builder Oreca and the IDEC Sport team for its WEC entry.

The GMR-001 will be driven by Andre Lotterer and Louis "Pipo" Derani, according to previous announcements. Lotterer is a three-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner with Audi and has two WEC titles. Derani's greatest achievements include a victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona and four victories at the 12 Hours of Sebring.

The French circuit of Paul Ricard will serve as the base for Genesis' motorsport department. Technical development of the GMR-001 Hypercar will continue throughout 2025, ahead of its racing debut in 2026.
