Turn that spare wheel in your house into a fan

Turning car parts into works of art or useful furniture is an idea that has long won over automotive enthusiasts — and now it has another applause-worthy example.

A Ukrainian studio called Metal Works Studio came up with a creative idea by transforming a Mercedes-AMG alloy wheel into nothing less than…a floor fan.

The idea combines the brutalist charm of German engineering with unexpected functionality.

And the best part: the process doesn't require a fancy workshop or advanced knowledge of industrial design — just a few basic tools, patience, and that passionate eye that only a true gearhead has for automotive parts.

The construction was detailed in a short video posted on the studio's Instagram.

The project began with the selection of a 20-inch AMG wheel, painted matte black, and a common floor fan, the kind you can find in any department store.

The first step was to disassemble the fan and cut the front grille so that it would fit perfectly in the center of the wheel. Next, the team drilled strategic points on the side of the wheel to attach both the grille and the base of the original fan.

The challenge here is not so much technical, but precision: measuring twice before cutting is essential, especially when dealing with a wheel that costs a good amount of money on the used market.

After everything was drilled, adjusted and repainted, the fan was reassembled inside the wheel and installed on the original support.

The result is a piece that easily transitions from a stylish mechanic's workshop to the living room of a car enthusiast with good taste — depending, of course, on the level of aesthetic tolerance of the partner.

With its bold design, the handmade fan maintains all the functionality of a regular model, but with much more personality.

The most interesting thing is that the concept does not need to be limited to Mercedes wheels. Any rim with adequate dimensions and spacing can be transformed into something similar, as long as it has openings that allow air to pass through.

If you are a fan of BMW, Audi, or even Japanese models, the idea adapts easily. Just don't try it with classic 10-inch Mini wheels — in that case, a wall clock might make more sense.

In addition to being a cool idea for creative recycling, the project shows how a passion for cars can go far beyond the streets and tracks. A simple discarded wheel can be given a new life — and even freshen up the environment. Literally.
