Toyota presents biomethane-powered Hilux in Brazil

Anyone visiting Agrishow 2025, in Ribeirão Preto-Brazil (SP), between April 28 and May 2, can now see up close a new product that promises to transform the countryside: Toyota has just revealed to the public the prototype of the biomethane-powered Hilux. Until now shown only to authorities during the G20 Energy Transition Week, it arrives as a milestone in this new stage of Toyota's journey towards low-emission mobility.

Toyota will be present at the 30th edition of Agrishow, one of the largest agricultural technology fairs in the world, which will take place between April 28 and May 2 in Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo.

With a space of 1,700 m², Toyota will exhibit to the public for the first time in its large stand the prototype of the first biomethane-powered pickup truck in the country, the Hilux, in addition to bringing its full line of products to the fair.

In this case, Toyota will include vehicles with the hybrid flex technology, developed by the brand in Brazil. However, biomethane will be the Japanese company's main highlight at the event.

Evandro Maggio, President of Toyota Brazil, comments: “Toyota’s trajectory is marked by pioneering and evolution in the development of new technologies. We were pioneers in hybrids and flex hybrids, in line with the challenges of decarbonization.

Maggio concludes: “Now, with the prototype of the biomethane Hilux, we reaffirm our commitment to more sustainable mobility, connected to the country’s vocations, which generates a positive impact on the environment and society.”

The biomethane-powered Hilux, a fuel that already powers trucks in the country, reinforces Toyota’s commitment to research and development of new technologies with the aim of accelerating the decarbonization of mobility with the use of biofuels.

The new Hilux had only been displayed at the G20 Energy Transition Week, in Foz do Iguaçu–PR, for authorities and experts. With this, the medium-sized pickup truck with chassis, the best-selling on the market, shows its versatility.

Derived from biogas, biomethane is a renewable fuel that can be produced from any organic matter, including sugarcane.

The Hilux equipped with a biomethane-powered engine represents another step by Toyota towards more sustainable automotive solutions. The proposal aims to align innovation with emissions reduction, in line with the global challenges of green mobility. Before Agrishow, the model had only been shown during the G20 Energy Transition Week, in Foz do Iguaçu (PR), restricted to specialists and authorities.

Produced from biogas, biomethane is a renewable energy source and can be generated from organic waste, including sugarcane, which is highly present in the Brazilian agro-industrial matrix. This versatility makes it extremely viable for rural areas, and can be produced in local biodigesters or in plants.

It is therefore a fuel with high potential, since it can be generated in biodigesters in rural areas or even in large sugar cane mills.

Therefore, by taking advantage of the leftovers from the ethanol or sugar production process, biomethane can also power pickup trucks.
