New Tiguan arrives in Mexico, but Volkswagen uses old engine manufactured in Brazil

The third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan was presented in Europe in 2023. In China, it debuted in the spring of 2024 in a version with an extended wheelbase.

In North America, the model was revealed last fall, but its commercial debut took place first in Mexico, where it is manufactured. Unlike the European and global versions, the North American Tiguan has its own identity.

In the European market, the SUV is sold as the Tayron, but in practice, it is an extended and redesigned version of the global Tiguan, a strategy similar to that adopted in the previous generation, when the model for North America was the Tiguan Allspace.

Visually, the new Tiguan sold in Mexico has exclusive headlights, grille and bumpers, as well as taillights with a different design.

The interior features a separate digital instrument panel, a multimedia center with a tablet-style screen and a gear selector on the steering column.

On the center console, there is a rotary control with an integrated display, which allows adjustments to the driving mode, volume and ambient lighting.

The SUV measures 4.670 m in length, 1.866 m in width and 1.665 m in height, with a wheelbase of 2.791 m, offering space for five occupants.

Under the hood, it maintains the 150-horsepower 1.4 TSI turbo engine, made in Brazil, coupled to a seven-speed DSG transmission and front-wheel drive. This 1.4 TSI engine began production in São Carlos, Brazil in 2016.

In the US, the model will be offered with a 2.0 TSI engine with 204 hp, eight-speed automatic transmission and the option of 4Motion all-wheel drive.

There are three versions available. The basic Trendline includes 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, 12.9-inch multimedia, rear camera, dual-zone air conditioning and adaptive cruise control.

The Comfortline adds 18-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, leather seats and heated front seats.

The top-of-the-line R-Line features a sports kit, 20-inch wheels, three-zone climate control, ventilated and massaging front seats, as well as a 15-inch multimedia screen and 360-degree cameras.

The 2025 Tiguan rides on the MQB Evo platform, instead of the previous generation's MQB, and uses all-new sheet metal. It has a shorter rear overhang, but is larger than the previous model. The new design is more athletic, with a sharp crease in the bodywork, squared-off wheel arches and a rear spoiler. The entry-level version comes with 17-inch wheels as standard, with 19- and 20-inch options available.

Prices range from 599,990 to 771,990 Mexican pesos
